Mayor Nutter Gives Updates on Hurricane Sandy [3:30pm]

Mayor Nutter just gave an update on  Hurricane Sandy response. Here are the highlights and pertinent information:

  • 230 Philadelphia residents are without power.
  • Heaviest rain will begin this afternoon and continue through the evening. Expect 5-8 more inches of rain.
  • 10,000 people who live in flood prone areas have heeded official’s warnings and have relocated.
  • 300 people have taken advantage of shelter facilities. There is still plenty of room.
  • Sheriff’s Office is closed.
  • Septa is shut down until further notice. Septa will assess whether they can safely resume service Tuesday morning. The process may take up to 8 hours. There will be no septa service Tuesday morning.

  • Non-essential Philadelphia city officials will be off tomorrow
  • School district of Philadelphia will be closed tomorrow
  • US Airways will suspend service tomorrow.
  • Trash removal services for Monday and Tuesday will be suspended until next week.
  • Bulk of the rain will occur potentially at midnight.
  • If you must drive, be particularly careful when driving over wet leaves. It is equivalent to driving over ice.
  • PHL Airport is open. Airlines are not flying. Flights are expected to resume Wednesday.
