New Jersey’s unemployment rate fell 0.1 percentage point to 9.6 percent in August, with a total of 500 nonfarm jobs added over the month, according to preliminary estimates released by the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development Wednesday.
Employment climbed to a seasonally adjusted level of 3,845,600 jobs. The state’s private sector added 3,700 jobs, marking a third consecutive month of expansion, but it was largely offset by the loss of 3,200 jobs in the public sector.
The department reported job losses in information (-1,000), education and health services (-900), manufacturing (-700), construction (-400) and other services (-100). Job gains were reported in trade, transportation and utilities (+4,700) and financial activities (+1,300).
The state’s previously reported total job count of 3,841,900 for June-July was revised to 3,845,100 based on more complete reporting from employers, which reflects an over-the-month loss of 21,200 jobs for that period.
